Welcome to FFXI!
Lots of us old timers play it to relive the glory days of the early- to mid-2000s, so it's great to see people who are completely new to FFXI come and play it. There's a pretty steep learning curve, so having a relevant guide can save you an enormous amount of frustration and days of wasted time.

For reference, also make sure to check out the fantastic Beginner's Macro Guide and the Intermediate Macro Guide

Keyboard Commands
A couple quick tips for keyboard commands that can help immensely when creating macros (vital for playing the game) and communicating with people:

/s = say. This will speak publicly to people within a certain radius around you

/t = tell. This will send a message to someone privately. Try /t madsheep hi there. If I'm on, I'll get a message that says 'hi there.'

CTRL + R = Respond to a /tell from someone

/cm = chatmode. If you get a linkshell (guild or chat group) in slot 1, type /cm l (that's a lowercase 'L') to set your chat to default to linkshell1. It needs to be done each time you log in. If you want it set to ls2, do /cm l2. Then /cm p will set your chatmode to party, /cm s will set your chatmode to say, and so on.

/c = check. You MUST check every mob you engage. If you don't, you will die because of it, guaranteed. You can check players and see their gear too, but it's considered rude by some people to be randomly examined. They're just being prissy, but it's a thing.

Searching for Players
If you want to see if someone's online, type /sea all <insert name here without the <> symbols>. Look for me by typing /sea all madsheep

/sea = search current area

/sea all = search all areas

/sea inv = search current area for people seeking a party

/sea all inv = search all areas for people seeking a party

/sea inv 12-22 = search current area for people seeking a party in level range 12-22

/sea all inv 12-22 = search all areas for people seeking a party in level range 12-22

If you need to leave a party, it can be very helpful to find a replacement for yourself before you go. Using these commands will help.

Enemy Difficulty
too weak to be worthwhile = you won't get xp or crystals, but will still get drops and they might still be a challenge for certain jobs.

easy prey = you'll get a small amount of xp. If you can kill them quickly it can actually be a good strategy when low lvl.

decent challenge = below your lvl, but getting tougher. Be careful.

even match = this mob is the same lvl as you. You will likely either struggle to beat it or it will kill you. When you're new, stick to EP and DC as much as possible.

tough = you may luck out and scrape by a confrontation if it's a worm or something, but it'll be tight.

very tough = you will die.

incredibly tough = you will die before you can even unlock and start trying to run away.

Mechanics & Commands
/ja = Job Ability. A macro using this is something like /ja Berserk <me>. That will use the WAR ability Berserk. Different JAs and other commands require different targets.

/ra = Ranged Attack. Type /ra <t> to use a ranged attack against the currently selected target. Type /ra <stnpc>. The <stnpc> part is for <select target npc> and gives you a cursor that lets you select a non-pc target.

/ma = Magic. Use /ma "Cure II" <stpc> to cast cure 2 on a nearby player character. If the /ja, /ws, /ma or whatever is more than one word, put it in double quotes and capitalize appropriately. You can also use <stpt> to choose only people within your party. The Intermediate Macro Guide has great info on this.

/ws = Weapon Skill. When you build 1000+ TP you can do a Weapon Skill. Since gear swaps are essential for maximizing damage, this is what an early WS macro might look like:

/equipset 1

/ws "Fast Blade" <stnpc> <wait 1>

/equipset 2

Equipset is an option that lets you preprogram gear sets for certain things. When auto-attacking and building TP, max out your Accuracy to hit as often as possible. When WSing, use /equipset to switch to gear with stats that benefit your weapon skill (typically STR for most DDs, though THFs benefit from DEX more for most of their weapon skills).

Early Grinding
Play around with macros and commands and test it all out thoroughly. Have fun with it while leveling a bunch of jobs to ~15 or so around starting areas. Windurst is a lovely starting area to level up in because there are some great drops and it's pretty. San d'Oria has mobs which drop fire and dark crystals, which are very lucrative, too. Around Bastok you'll find yourself running around that dry, dusty butthole of a landscape, smacking all sorts of things.

Personally, I strongly recommend leveling AT LEAST jobs like WAR, MNK, WHM, BLM, RDM, and THF to the 12-15 range on your own. Start with WAR so that you can build up a variety of skills in things like sword, dagger, club, shield, evasion, parrying. That will help you a little bit as you lvl other jobs that are less adept at melee. Because you're going to be doing a lot of meleeing with mage classes in the early solo lvls and every little bit helps. Having some skill in evasion before leveling a mage is very useful.

Save ALL of your beastmen's seal<nowiki/>s. They're invaluable and will give you the opportunity to win fantastic items down the road. Look into BCNM<nowiki/>s to learn more.

Some beastman mobs will drop spells that you can learn, but they're generally dirt cheap anyway. Find the town vendors for spells and see if you can flip them on the Auction House for a profit. Buy weapons, spells, and cheap leather and cloth armour from vendors in town instead of the auction house. You'll save money that you desperately need when starting out. There's a typical progression for early melee classes that goes like this:

* Level 1 - bronze gear
* Level 7 - leather gear
* Level 11 - brass gear

As always, compare NPC prices to AH prices to get the most bang for your buck and to determine if you can make some money selling things at a markup.

You probably won't get a standard party invite until you're 12+, and once you do you may need to make the perilous trek up to the Valkurm Dunes. If you do, see if you can get escorted by someone who can Raise you if you get KOed.

GET SIGNET FROM GATE GUARDS BEFORE LEAVING TOWN. This will ensure you get crystals from mobs and build up your Conquest Points, which you'll need to get single-use warp scrolls and reraise scrolls. You'll want to constantly have those on hand pretty much forever.

ALWAYS CHECK MOBS. If you don't, you'll engage a Tough mob when you're a half health and it'll push your s#!7 in.

If you're feeling stuck, try to /shout in town for a newbie linkpearl. That'll connect you with people who can answer more specific questions. Lots of linkshells are happy to take on new players and show them the ropes, so if you don't get any bites after a couple shouts, try again in an hour or two after killing some bees.

Notorious Monsters
There are some really good Notorious Monsters around the starter towns that benefit low lvl jobs. Look up Swamfisk, Maighdean Uaine, Sharp-Eared Ropipi, Nunyenunc, and Spiny Spipi for viable low level NMs with good drops - some of which are 100% drop rates.

Basic Leveling Progression Overview
Level 18 - When you hit lvl 18 you can get your subjob, which is huge.

Level 30 - At 30 you can unlock advanced jobs, which is another big step forward. You can hit rank 3 in your nation pretty easily by the time you're 30. Keep an eye open for people shouting for missions you're on, and ask linkshell mates if they'll help you with yours. Chains of Promathia (the first major expansion that non-JP players got) missions start around lvl 30 with the promyvion areas. If you can find a group doing that when you're able to access them, jump on it because they're a pain. But read up ahead of time so you know what you're getting into.

Level 50 - Once you hit 50, you need to complete a quest to progress to 51. At 55 that happens again, and so on every 5 levels until you max at 75. That stuff and leveling sometimes keep you plenty busy before you really even need to think about storyline.

Making Money
This is a perpetual challenge, but can be immensely rewarding. When trying to make money, there are a few things that are especially lucrative at lower levels. Look for things like various crystals (primarily fire, dark, lightning, wind), beehive chip<nowiki/>s (which drop relatively infrequently from bees all over the world), silk thread and yagudo necklaces (around the Windurst starter region), sheepskin (start crafting those into sheep leather right away for more profit), and various goblin drops which sell well on the Auction House. Farm those while getting xp and it'll be a big boon.

A lot of other things like land crab meat, dhalmel hides, and any other drops which don't sell quickly on the Auction House are fine to sell to NPCs for quick cash. And if you're ambitious, look up some crafting guides on the FFXI Wiki or this wiki to use the crystals and drops you find to level up crafting. You will be really glad you did that later on.

When selling on the AH, it's sometimes more efficient to sell stacks of things. A stack is either 12 or 99 of something. There are cases where singles are more lucrative, so check the AH site to compare and make the most informed decision. When selling, don't undercut dramatically to make a quick sale. The economy is manipulable and you're only hurting yourself and others if you lowball excessively.

Level Sync
Level sync is typically 10 levels and is a feature that will let your party sync down to the same level - not up. So you can have someone who's 22 sync down to 12 to party with you in the dunes.

You will have better luck getting invited to a party if you're already in the zone, too. Try to run to Valkurm while seeking, and then rest and explore Selbina while you wait. It's a good place to skill up fishing and make a small amount of money, too.

Misc. Notes
* Get all teleport crags you can. Touch the crystals whenever you're near the giant white structures to get the key items, which you will keep forever.
** The Holla crag is closest to San d'Oria
** Dem is closest to Bastok
** Mea is closest to Windurst
* The gate guards that give signet will also offer supply quests.
** You can only carry supplies for one region at a time, so prioritize well
** If your nation controls the Zulkheim region (where Valkurm Dunes is), offer to take supplies there. Once you've done that, you can teleport there from lvl 10, which is a HUUUUGE benefit
** Always watch out for where you can deliver supplies until you have all outpost warp locations available to you
** It can take a long time to get some since the nation control resets every Saturday night at JP midnight (which means Sunday morning time in North America and afternoon in Europe).
* Sometimes you can set your homepoint closer to where you're going. If you die, you won't have to redo the whole run. The downside is that it can bite you in the butt when trying to return home until you have more efficient means of transportation.

I hope this helped!

* Level 1 - bronze gear
* Level 7 - leather gear
* Level 11 - brass gear

Butternuts McBurnybuns (Fandom): Big info dump!

Searching for players:

* Level 1 - bronze gear
* Level 7 - leather gear
* Level 11 - brass gear

TOCright
Welcome to this Intermediate level macro guide. The aim is to further expand your knowledge on the different ways macros can be used in FFXI. If you're a new player and haven't already read my Beginner's Macro Guide, I suggest you do so before reading any further into this one.

As I suggested in the previous guide, I would read this guide before joining an experience points party for the first time.

Targeting
So far you will have been likely targeting mobs with the tab key/keybind/dpad and this will have worked just fine. Once you find yourself in a party however, suddenly there are 5 other people to tab between. This becomes a problem as we can often find ourselves quickly needing to target a certain party member for a life saving cure or to target the latest pull with provoke. Macros provide us with a much easier way of doing this.

Lets take a look at this macro:

:

As we know from the previous guide, this macro will use the job ability Provoke on the <t> or target. However with a little change, we can make this macro target the latest mob to be pulled.
:

Simply changing <t> to <bt> now tells this macro to provoke the last mob to be acted upon by a party member. Seeing as in an XP party this will be the last pull, that will be the target. Now, imagine the puller gets a link on their way back to camp and you want to provoke the link instead of the mob that was pulled. The above macro wouldn't work as it would provoke the wrong mob! However, if we were to have another macro that looked like this...
:

...our provoke macro now brings up a Sub-Targeting (or Select-Target) selector which will allow us to tab/dpad between all of the NPC's within our vicinty. We can simply tab between the pulled mob and the link, hitting confirm to activate the provoke.

----
Now let's look at a different example.
:

As you should already realise, this is a simple cure macro. Again, this macro encounters the same issue as described in the previous example, targeting. With some simple changes to the macro target, we can make it far more useful.

:

With the change in the target or <t> to Sub Target Party or <stpt>, a little sub-target cursor appears on the party list. No need to tab through mobs, npcs or other playable characters to find your party members!

We could also use the targets <stal> / Sub Target Alliance or <stpc> / Sub Target Playable Character to target alliance members or any other playable character you may encounter.

----
The final targeting syntax we will cover involves targeting individual party and alliance members. Here is an example macro:

:

As you can see we use <p1>, which will target the first party member on the party list. We can use <p1> through to <p5> to target any party member from the party list. Using <p0> is an alternative self-target to <me>.
:

And as you may have already guessed, <a10> will target the first member of the top most alliance and can be used up to <a15> to target the last member. Using <a20> through to <a25> can be used to target the members of the bottom alliance.

For a list of all possible macro targets, please see the Macros page.

Changing Equipment
Another vital function of macros is their ability to change different pieces of equipment. In 2020, gear swaps have somewhat been replaced by addons such as "Gearswap" and "Ashitacast" however, I will focus on the games original method of doing this.
There are 2 methods of swapping gear via macros. We can use the commands /equip and /equipset. In this intermediate level guide, I will only cover /equip. /equipset will be covered in the Advanced Macro Guide. If you feel confident enough, go right ahead and check that guide out as on the most part, /equipset replaces the /equip macro. I cover /equip here solely as it's easier for new players to learn and still has it's place in some situations.

Similarly to a simple command macro (e.g. provoke), an /equip macro is split into 3 parts:

: * The Command
: * The Target
: * The Item to be equipped
----
The Command
The command is simply /equip. Nothing else to it.

----
The Target
The target is simply the equipment slot that you wish to change. For example, if i wanted to /equip a subligar, i would use the target prefix legs as that is the slot that my subligar will be equipped to. Below is a list of all equipment slot prefixes:

width="25%" valign="top" align="left" |
* main
* sub
* range
* ammo

width="25%" valign="top" align="left" |
* head
* neck
* ear1
* ear2

width="25%" valign="top" align="left" |
* body
* hands
* ring1
* ring2

width="25%" valign="top" align="left" |
* back
* waist
* legs
* feet

----
The item to be equipped
To finish off the macro, we need to include the name of the item we wish to equip. We also need to surround the name with quotation marks. The name of the item must match how it is written in the items description (where you can see the items statistics), otherwise it might not work!

So to complete our macro, it would look like one of these examples:

: /equip main "Onion sword"
: /equip legs "Brass subligar"
: /equip ring2 "Saintly ring"
That's all there is to it. At lower levels you can make good use out of this command as there are fewer pieces of equipment to switch between. As you progress in levels and more gear becomes available, you will likely find that the 6 line limit in each macro will make mass gearswaps increasingly difficult. At this point, I would suggest you switch to the /equipset command instead which as I stated earlier, can be read about in the next guide in this series Advanced Macro Guide.

As a final side note, newer players may be wondering why gear swaps are important in FFXI. Simply, they enable players to perform their jobs better. A Red Mage may wish to switch to MND rings when casting spells such as paralyze and then to INT rings when casting spells such as sleep. A Warrior may wish to switch between a haste belt when TPing and an accuracy belt when performing a weapon skill. There are countless examples where changing gear is essential to perform your job to its full capacity.

This guide is clearly not finished yet and very much a work in progress. Please check back at a later date!

Miscellaneous
To finish off this guide, I will cover a few 'Utility' macros and commands, the first of which is <wait>.

Wait
We can use the wait command to you guessed it, wait. You can use either <wait #> or /wait # however I would recommend always using <wait #> as it can be added onto the end of a macro, whereas /wait # takes up a line by itself. The wait command only accepts whole numbers such as <wait 1>, <wait 2> etc. Examples of wait can be seen below:

:

:

----
Echo
When used, /echo will return the text you type after it in the chat window. Only you will see this text. It's somewhat been replaced with 3rd party addons however, it does still have some uses. For example:
:

Using this macro will return the following text:

:
Used with the /wait command, it can be a useful reminder. For example, the spell Sleepga unresisted keeps a mob slept for 60 seconds. We could use this example below to remind us that sleep is about to wear off.

:

----
Recast
Again, a command that is entirely replaced by 3rd party addons. /recast "Name of Spell/Ability" will return the time remaining of the specified spell/ability in the chat window.

:
...And Finally
A couple or final commands which can be used to make handy macros.

This macro allows you to use items. It also allows for easier trading of items to NPCs however, only one item may be traded at a time. If a quest requires you to trade 2 or more of an item, this must be done manually. Target can be defined as <t>, <me> etc.
:/item "Item Name" <define target>
----
Makes Beastmaster pets, Dragoon pets untargetable until turned back on. Handy to reduce the amount of NPCs that need tabbing between.

:/ignorepet on, /ignorepet off

Further Reading
This is just a beginner's guide to macros. They are much more in-depth and useful than described here and i would recommend reading at least the Intermediate Macro Guide before attempting your first XP party.

TOCright
This guide is aimed at new FFXI players who have no knowledge of macros whatsoever. I will explain exactly what macros are used for and how to start writing them for yourself.
What are Macros?
Macros in FFXI are a set of pre-written commands that tell your character to perform actions. They allow you to perform these actions more quickly than manually searching for spells, abilities etc. To find your macros, try holding the CTRL or ALT key. You will notice a bar appears at the top of the screen, 10 on the CTRL line and 10 on the ALT line, for a total of 20 macros. If you hold either CRTL/ALT and hit either the up/down arrow keys, you will find another set of 20 macros. You can repeat this 10 times before returning back to your first set of macros. This is called a macro book. You have 20 macro books in total which means you can have a total of 4000 different macros.

To use them, you need to hold down either the CTRL/ALT keys and hit the corresponding number of a macro. You can also use the arrow keys to cycle between them. If using a gamepad you can choose to toggle the macro menus on or off when you press the left or right trigger, or to require holding them the entire time. As a brand new player, you will have a selection of generic default macros which you will find very little use for. Before you change them to your liking, lets learn how macros actually work.

Understanding Macros
Macros can be broken down into 3 parts: the command, the command name and the target. A typical macro looks like:

:

The 3 parts are:

* /ma - This is the command
* "Cure" - This is the command name
* <t> - This is the target

The Command
This tells your character what to do. In our example, "/ma" is commanding your character to cast a spell or MAgic.

Command Name
This tells your character the name of the command you wish to perform. In our example, we are casting the spell "Cure".

Target
This tells your character who to target the command at. In our example "<t>", the T stands for the current target.
Example Macros
Here is a small list of basic macros which all new players can use and should give a general idea of the different ways we can write them.

* /ma "Stone" <t> - This command will cast the elemental black magic spell "Stone" at the current target.
* /ma "Dia" <t> - This command will cast the enfeebling white magic spell "Dia" at the current target.
* /ma "Cure" <me> - This command will cast the healing white magic spell "Cure" on yourself.
* /ja "Provoke" <t> - This will command the character to use the Warrior Job Ability "Provoke" on the current target.
* /ja "Steal" <t> - This will command the character to use the Thief Job Ability "Steal" on the target.
* /ja "Boost" <me> - This will command the character to use the monk Job Ability "Boost" on yourself.
* /ws "Fast blade" <t> - This will peform the Weapon Skill "Fast blade" on the target.

There are a couple of useful macros which are made up of just a command and a target:

* /a <t> or /attack <t> - This command will tell your character to begin "auto-Attacking" the target.
* /ra <t> - This command will tell your character to perform a "Ranged Attack" on the target (this macro must be pressed periodically as ranged attacks do not happen automatically, unlike regular attacks).
And finally here are a couple of macros which contain just a command:
* /h or /heal - This command tells your character to Heal and recover their hp/mp.
* /c or /check - This command performs the Check command on the target.
*/fish - This command will make your character start fishing if you have the right equipment and are in front of a body of water.
Further Reading
Guide

Welcome to the guide. It's primarily aimed at new players who are new to XP parties in FFXI. It is still a working progress but should hopefully contain enough information to the get the general idea behind XP parties.

Generally players solo from levels 1 to 10 or 11 because quite simply it's the easiest way to gain XP at those levels. Once you hit the 10 or 11 mark, for many jobs it becomes quicker to gain XP in a group or a party.

Where to Party
By far and large, the most common XP area at these levels can be found in the Valkurm Dunes. There are many other places to party and a few different ones aimed at level 1 onwards however, realistically everyone should be able to find the dunes at it's the most common. Depending on which nation you started in, you will take different paths to get there:

* Bastok: South Gustaberg -> North Gustaberg -> Konschtat Highlands - > Valkurm Dunes

* San d'Oria: West Ronfaure -> La Theine Plateau -> Valkurm Dunes

* Windurst: East Sarutabaruta -> Tahrongi Canyon -> Buburimu Peninsula -> Mhaura -> Ship bound for Selbina -> Selbina -> Valkurm Dunes
First of all you will notice that both Bastok and San d'Oria have far fewer areas to cross to reach Valkurm Dunes. Geographically Windurstians are the furthest from the 'Dunes'. Don't be fooled though, all nations undertake a perilous journey, regardless of how far they have to travel.

Once you journey out of the starter areas or 'zones' of Ronfaure, Gustaberg and Sarutabaruta, i would recommend NOT fighting any mobs, providing your sole purpose is to reach the Dunes. The difficulty of mobs significantly increases and they will likely kick your ass. I would give ALL mobs a wide berth as well, unless you know that they do not Aggro. Aggro is a game mechanic of FFXI where mobs begin attacking you for apparently no reason. Usually the reason will be that they 'saw' you or 'heard' you. As long as you keep your distance, they'll have no reason to be upset. Alternatively spells such as Sneak and Invisible or the items Silent Oil and Prism Powder will conceal you from 'aggro'ing'.

When you finally reach the Dunes, you'll be looking for the map co-ordinate (G-9) where you will find the little town called Selbina. This will be your first place of safety and will be able to access your Mog House via a Nomad Moogle.

How to Find a Party
To express the FFXI world that you wish to Party, you need to be Looking for Party. To do this, you need to go into the menus, select the party tab and then select the option 'seek party'. You should be a little green icon appear next to your name which means you've been successful in turning this on. Now any other player who is looking to form a party knows that you would like to join one.
Typical Party Set-ups
So you've been invited to a party. The first thing you will notice that on the bottom left of your screen, where you normally see your HP, MP and TP, you will see these same stats for your party. If the party is full, there will be 6 names there. Your party leader will tell you where you will be 'camping' in Valkurm Dunes. If you ask nicely, someone will escort you to camp, as you all want to get there safely. Deaths en-route means less Experience Points overall after all.

If you go back into the 'party' tab of the menus, you will now see a new option called 'party members'. In here you can find out further information about our party, mainly what job they currently are. Alternatively you can also use the commands /invite. A good party will have a variety of jobs. There are several roles within a XP party and you need to find the right balance to gain XP efficiently. To add someone directly, you can also type /pcmd add PLAYERNAME, where /pcmd stands for 'party command'.

The typical roles within a party are:

* Healer - (White Mage)
* Tank - (Paladin)
* Support - (Bard)
* Damage Dealer - (Samurai)

(example jobs that fit these roles)

A good party in the Dunes will have at least 1 healer, 1 tank, 1 support who can back-up heal and 3 damage dealers. Not all parties will fit into this criteria however as some jobs can cover more than 1 role. For example, a Black Mage is primarily a damage dealer but with white mage sub job, they can back up heal too. A Warrior is primarily a damage dealer but with their versatility and job abilities such as provoke, can be used as a tank as well. Ultimately, as long as all these roles are covered, your party should be a good one. There's nothing stopping a group of 6 white mages experiencing together but they will find that their rate of experience won't be as high as a well balanced group.

Guide

Welcome to the guide. It's primarlily aimed at new players who are new to XP partys in FFXI. It is still a working progress but should hopefully contain enough information to the get the general idea behind XP partys.

Generally players solo from levels 1 to 10 or 11 because quite simply it's the easiest way to gain XP at those levels. Once you hit the 10 or 11 mark, for many jobs it becomes quicker to gain XP in a group or a party.
