Historical Background
In Russian folklore Zmei Gorynich is an evil dragon-like creature with three (sometimes 6 or 9) heads that spits fire. The “classic” Zmei (He-Snake) Gorynich is most closely resembled by NM Hydra.
The well known bylina (free verse heroic poetry) “Story About Dobrynya Nikitich and Zmei Gorynych” describes the struggle between Dobrynya (one of the three great bogatyr) and Gorynych that resulted in ultimate demise of Zmei.
In another folk tale, “Volshebnye Yagody” (Magical Berries) Zmei Gorynich is mentioned as being the close relative of the evil lord Nemal Chelovek (presumably Devil). The protagonist, soldier Ivan, travels to the far away kingdom of Nemal Chelovek (presumably Land of the Dead) to rescue a kidnapped Princess and kills him with the help of the relic multi-strike sword Samosek (auto-chopper).
