Historical Background

Stone Soup is an old folk tale about hungry travelers who persuade the local villagers into giving them food. They begin by putting water and a stone in a pot, over a fire. When a villager would pass by curiously, they would explain that they were making "stone soup" which tastes wonderful, but it could use a little garnish to help the flavor. The villager would gladly contribute some seasoning, or some vegetables, or some meat. Eventually, a delicious and nourishing pot of soup is enjoyed by all.
