Historical Background

In Medieval bestiaries, the Peryton is a winged, stag-like creature. It had the head, front, and antlers of a stag and the rear half of a bird (which is covered in dark green or light blue feathers), in addition to wings. The shadow it casts resembles that of a human being. They were reported to travel in flocks and attack sailors off the Strait of Gibraltar, which would later lead to them being associated with Atlantis (they were originally native to it).
