Historical Background

The term "ascension" means the act of rising, going up. In the case of Christianity the term is applied to Christ coming back to life, specifically his rising to Heaven. This could explain the reason the scythe has the additional effect on undead but moreso the fire element since fire is commonly associated with putting the undead to rest. Also the elemental resistence bonuses of both Fire and Light could symbolize Hell and Heaven.
