The truth was that Ulrich, out of a grudge, attempted to kill Raogrimm in the valley away from the other expedition members. He resented Raogrimm's relationship with Cornelia and the talekeeper's attempts to establish peaceful relationships with the beastmen. But as Ulrich attempted the killing strike, Cornelia intercepted the attack and was fatally wounded. Ulrich, horrified at having slain Cornelia instead, fled the scene and left them for dead.

In shock over the betrayal, Raogrimm quickly succumbed to despair, pain, and anger. Guided by the dark influence of the black magicite, he traveled to the dark protocrystal in Uleguerand Range and made a pact with the Dark Divinity, gaining an Army of Dark Kindred Demons and transforming into the Shadow Lord.
