Historical Background
Guespier (or, more rarely, guespiere) was the pre-1740 orthography of French word guêpier, meaning "hornets' nest" in the literal sense, and "can of worms" in the figurative sense. The weapon here probably refers to the latter sense since it weakens defense. The word is also found in the name of French town Saint-Avit-les-Guespières.
