Historical Background
The arbalest was a late variation of the medieval European crossbow. They were made of steel, set in a shaft of wood, with a string and a trigger, bent with a piece of iron fitted for that purpose and used to throw bullets, large arrows, darts, etc. Also called an abblast or an arcubalist. Arbalests were sometimes considered inhumane or unfair weapons, since an inexperienced crossbowman could use one to kill a knight who had a lifetime of training.
