Historical Background
Libra is traditionally the seventh constellation out of 12 in the Zodiac. It represents a balance scale (the only constellation to represent an inanimate object). It is an Air-element sign and a Cardinal sign (signs considered dynamic and able to initiate things). Libra governs the 7th House (partnerships of all forms, including marriage, enemies) and it is ruled by the celestial body Venus, a planet is shares with the zodiac sign Taurus (though one of those two signs may be assigned to the new 10th planet discovered in 2005). Libra is a dim constellation bounded by Virgo, Scorpius, Ophiuchus, Hydra, Serpens (Serpens Caput), Lupus, Centaurus. Its named stars are (from Alpha to Delta): Zubenelgenubi, Zubeneschamali, Zuben Elakrab, Zuben Elakribi. Zubenelgenubi is Arabic for "southern claw", Zubeneschamali is Arabic for "northern claw", Zuben Elakrab is Arabic for "scorpion claw", which gives hints at Libra's origin as a constellation. Originally Scorpius constellation had larger claws in its Greek interpretation, but when the Romans created Libra, they carved it from Scorpio's claws, reducing the scorpion's claws to a much smaller size (See Ophiuchus for more on the history of this rearrangement of the Zodiac). It should be noted the Mesopotamians viewed this sector of the sky as having a balance scale as well. Traditionally, people born from September 23 to October 22 are considered Libras. Libra is Latin for "balance". The abbreviation for the unit of measurement, the Pound, lb, is an abbreviation of Libra.
Libra, as stated above, did not appear in Greek mythology. The Romans believed this constellation to represent the scales of justice held by Iusticia (the Roman equivalent of Themis goddess of divine order and law).
