Rods are grouped by: composition (Wood or Synthetic, from lowest to highest quality), and target fish size.
You should always use a rod designed for the size (small or big) of the fish you are targeting. "Fish may be too small to catch with this rod"/"Fish may be too big to catch with this rod" messages occur otherwise, with resultant loss of catch almost all the time.

Wooden fishing rods drain stamina faster. but are more fragile and don't keep fish on the line as long.
Synthetic fishing rods drain stamina slower, but are more robust and keep fish on the line for longer.
