Historical Background
Gelong is the word used for a fully ordained monk in Tibetan Buddhism. It is the masculine version of the word (the feminine is gelongma). The gelong observes 150 precepts on ethical matters along with a monastic code.
Gelong is the third grade of monk out of 6 grades: genye (layperson observing the 5 silas), getsul (novice monk studying to become a gelong), gelong (fully ordained monk), geshe (‘learned’ monk [equivalent of having a doctorate in Buddhist theology]; requires mastery of 5 subjects), lama gyupa (elder monk well-versed in all branches of Buddhism, taught oral teachings that were not written down), and kenpo (head of a monastery).
