Historical Background

Pisces is traditionally the twelfth sign out of 12 in the Zodiac. It represents two fishes bound by a cord or string. It is a Water-element sign and a Mutable sign (signs considered flexible and adaptable). Pisces governs the 12th House (rules secrets, dreams, hidden matters, confinement, escape, withdrawing from the world, charity, sacrifice, and transcending the self) and is ruled by the celestial body Neptune (It was considered to be ruled by Jupiter prior to Neptune's discovery in 1846). Pisces is a constellation bounded by Aquarius, Aries, Cetus, Pegasus, Andromeda, Triangulum. Its named stars are (Alpha, Beta, Eta): Alrisha, Fum Al Samakah, Alpherg. The constellation is located in a part of the night sky called The Sea (an area filled with several aquatic-themed constellations). Traditionally, people born from February 19 to March 20 (or March 19, depending on when the Vernal Equinox falls) are considered Pisces. Pisces is Latin for "fishes".

In Greek mythology, the constellation Pisces was supposed to represent the goddess Aphrodite and the god Eros, who transformed into fish to escape the terrible monster Typhon. They were tied together to prevent themselves from ever losing contact with one another. In another version, one fish, which lies below the Ecliptic (the line which defines the Zodiac) represents imprisonment in the Underworld, while the other fish, which lies above the Ecliptic, represents escape from the Underworld.
