In Native American mythology (specifically the Kawaiisu of Southern California), Nihniknoovi (sometimes called Nihnoovi) is a fierce hawk which snatched people off the land and carried them off to the mountains, where it devoured them. It is commonly known as the “man-carrying bird”. It is unclear what it means, but niwinookaridi means “person-carrying” in the Kawaiisu language. | In Native American mythology (specifically the Kawaiisu of Southern California), Nihniknoovi (sometimes called Nihnoovi) is a fierce hawk which snatched people off the land and carried them off to the mountains, where it devoured them.
