Historical Background

In Japanese Buddhist legend, Rasetsu were black demons that ate humans. The Rasetsu eventually became guardian deities in Buddhism after being converted, one of the 12 Deva Guardians (Juniten or Jyuniten), protecting the Southeast. They are said to feed on the flesh of those who go to hell. It is considered an import of the Hindu demon Rakshasa. They are also known as the Ten Cannibal Demon Women.
