Historical Background

Woad (or glastum) is the common name of the flowering plant Isatis tinctoria in the family Brassicaceae. It is commonly called Dyer's Woad. Woad is also the name of a blue dye produced from the plant used primarily in dyes and paints. In Europe, woad was believed to be the only source for blue dye available until the end of the sixteenth century when indigo first appeared on the market. A popular historical account of the woad dye being used comes from the northern inhabitants of Britain. They came to be known as Picts (Picti), which means "painted ones" in Latin, due to the Roman accounts of them painting or tattooing their bodies with the blue dye.
