Historical Background
Also spelled Andvaranaut, Andvarinaut, it was a cursed ring in Norse mythology. The trickster god Loki stole the ring from Andvari. As a result, Andvari cursed it to bring pain, bad luck and suffering to all who beheld it. Loki gave it to King Hreidmar. Fafnir killed Hreidmar and took the ring. It is the Ring in Richard Wagner's famous opera Der Ring des Nibelungen, a story which depicts the creation of the ring and everyone who wore it and all the misfortune and harm which befell those. The story of this ring was one of the inspirations for the One Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic, The Lord of the Rings.
