Historical Background
Morion (mineral)
Morion/Morion Quartz is a dark-brown to opaque black variety of Smoky Quartz (itself a brown, transparent variety of Quartz) which results from irradiation (natural or artificial) of Milk Quartz which contains aluminum. Morion is uncommon, though not rare. It forms next to uranium deposits. Basically, Morion is a black quartz. Its color explains why Square-Enix gave it the gray Worm model when that color palette was added into FFXI. Amethyst and Citrine are two other varieties of Quartz that are given names due to their different color. Scotland is a noted source of Morion.
Morion (helmet)
Although it does not pertain directly to this item the more common usage of Morion refers to a type of helmet. A morion is a type of open helmet used during the 16th and early 17th centuries, usually having a flat brim and a crest from front to back. The morion, though generally identified with Spanish conquistadors, was common among foot soldiers of European nationalities, including the English; the first were issued during Edward VI's reign.
