Historical Background

In Japanese Buddhism, Gaki {餓鬼 "ghoul"} are spirits of greedy or jealous humans who were cursed with insatiable hunger or desire due to their vices. The food or object they desire is usually something considered repulsive or disgusting. Gaki tended to be depicted as emaciated humans with large stomachs and very tiny mouths and necks, though sometimes they appear in the form of spheres of smoke or fire. They are usually seen as pitiable spirits and are merely small nuisances. There is a festival in mid-August to remember the gaki, which provides them with offerings and remembrances.
