Historical Background
"Tamas" is a Sanskrit word that refers to the quality of inertness, stability, or darkness; it is linked to Brahma the Creator in the Hindu Trimurti. It is a force which promotes darkness, death, destruction, ignorance, sloth, resistance, and indifference. Tamas is always present during sinful acts. Of the three gunas in Samkhya, sāttvika "pure", rājasika "dim", and tāmasika "dark", it is the most negative.
