Historical Background

In the English language and culture, a bugaboo was a word used to refer to anything imaginary and frightening, which usually caused needless fear or fright or something used to frighten children. The Bugaboo was not an actual entity from folklore. Bugaboo (and Boogeyman) derive from the same word, bug/bugge, which is Anglo-Saxon for "terror", "ghost", or "devil".
