Historical Background

A monstrous Black Dog from the folklore around Yorkshire, England, described as having huge teeth and claws, baleful breath, and blazing red eyes. It only appeared at night. It was one of the Black Dogs, which were a category of creatures viewed as omens of death in the British Isles. Other Black Dogs included Capelthwaite, Guytrash, Mauthe Doog, Padfoot, Gallytrot, Black Shuck/Old Shuck, Yeth, and Gwyllgi.
