Historical Background
In Christian demonology (Late Medieval- Early Modern European), Purson (also spelled Pursan, Curson) is a demon holding the rank and title of Great King of Hell, commanding 22 legions of demons. He is depicted as a man with a lion's face, riding a bear and carrying a vicious viper in one hand. Before he arrives, trumpets can be heard sounding. He is said to know of hidden things and can find treasures anywhere. He also has knowledge of the past, present, and future, including of the creation of the world and all the secrets of the Earth, including the divine ones. He is also known for bringing high-quality Familiars (see any of the Beastmaster [Familiar]). Purson was once a Throne (a category of angel). Manticores in FFXI look like a lion, bear, and bat hybrid, so Purson was an ideal choice to be a Manticore. Purson is 1 of 69 demons listed in the Pseudomonarchia Dæmonum and one of 72 listed in the Ars Goetia (the first section of the Lesser Key of Solomon).
