Virgo is traditionally the sixth constellation out of 12 in the Zodiac. It represents a virgin woman holding an ear of wheat. It is an Earth-element sign and a Mutable sign (signs considered flexible and adaptable). Virgo governs the 6th House (work, employment, health, habits, hobbies) and it is ruled by the celestial body Mercury, a planet it shares with the zodiac sign Gemini (though Virgo may be reassigned to the new 10th planet discovered in 2005). Virgo is a constellation bounded by Leo, Libra, Boötes, Hydra, Serpens (Serpens Caput), Corvus, Crater, Coma Berenices. In this constellation is the Virgo Supercluster, a supercluster of galaxies which includes the Local Group (the Milky Way Galaxy, Andromeda Galaxy, Triangulum Galaxy, and many other smaller galaxies). It is one of the largest known structures in the universe. Its named stars are (from Alpha to Epsilon): Spica, Zavijava, Porrima, Auva, Vindemiatrix. Traditionally, people born from August 23 to September 22 (or September 23, depending on when the Autumnal Equinox falls) are considered Virgos. Virgo is Latin for "virgin".
There are varying accounts of who is represented as the constellation Virgo in Greek mythology. The most popular account is Virgo is the goddess Astraea, goddess of justice and daughter of Themis. Astraea was supposedly on Earth during the Golden Age, but after the age ended and humanity became corrupt, she returned to the heavens in disgust. Other accounts depict Virgo as Persephone, Callisto, Athena, and Hera. The Mesopotamians viewed Virgo as Ishtar, the Egyptians viewed Virgo as Isis.
