Historical Background

The name Coeurl originates from the science fiction short story "Black Destroyer" by A.E. Van Vogt (published in Astounding magazine, July 1939). The short story was later included as part of a compilation work, The Voyage of the Space Beagle (1950), with 3 other short stories by Van Vogt. It was depicted as a sentient alien panther-like creature with tentacles and psionic capabilities that resided on a planet that houses the ruins of ancient cities.

The Coeurl has appeared in Final Fantasy II, IV, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XI, XII and Crystal Chronicles.
