Certain monster abilities require the target to be looking at them to be effective. Examples of such attacks are listed below.

Any detrimental effects from these abilities can be avoided entirely by facing away from the monster using them. However, many of these abilities can be readied quickly by the monster, and may be too quick for most players to be able to react to. In addition, it takes a certain amount of time for player movements to be recognized and registered by the game server; meaning that even if you tried to turn around in reaction to avoid a Gaze Attack, if the server has not recognized your movement yet, you will still be affected by the attack.

In some cases, certain players, primarily the mages and back-row jobs, will spend the entire fight facing away from the enemy being fought such that they are never affected by its Gaze Attacks, and are therefore better able to help the tanks and other melees recover from them. A type of enemy where this tactic is commonly employed is the Hecteyes, which can inflict paralysis with its ability Hex Eye. This is especially so against the NM Hecteyes Hakutaku, which tends to use Hex Eye in repeated succession. Healers afflicted with paralysis will have a hard time removing paralysis from their party members, including themselves, which can add great difficulty to the fight.

Some of these abilities can be used by Blue Mages as blue magic. While the intended target(s) must be facing the BLU for the spell to be effective, the BLU does not have to be facing the target(s).
