They are naturally aggressive animals that attack on sight with their powerful beaks and petrifying gaze. Their large size and nasty temperament can make them a rather imposing presence to many explorers of Vana'diel. Upon defeating these birds, adventurers may be rewarded with their meat, which is a highly desired commodity for cooks across Vana'diel. The skin is also valued, as it is used in a number of moderately high-level synthesis recipes.

Historical Background
A creature from classic folklore which was described as a giant rooster with some lizard or dragon-like characteristics. It was reported to be hatched from a hen's egg laid in the nest of a serpent or in some accounts a toad. The Cockatrice could turn people to stone by looking at them, or in some accounts breathing on them. It is considered similar to, yet different from the Basilisk (see Basilic), which is hatched from a serpent's egg in a hen's nest.
