Historical Background
In ancient Persian mythology, it was believed all the spirits of animals which were sacrificed to the gods would be absorbed into a divine entity called Geush Urvan. This entity was considered the protector of all animals and on Earth. It was considered to be the power of the Earth given the form of a bull. In Zoroastrianism, Geush Urvan was demoted to be simply the personification of all animals. According to Mithraic legends, it lived on Earth for 3000 years, meaning the true power of the universe resided there, belonging to the Earth. However, the god Mithras/Mitra killed Geush Urvan, resulting in its power transferring to the heavens, belonging to the Gods (this shift from Earth-based power to Sky/Heaven-based power is an archetypal switch found all over Old World religious mythology/history. This story has the hallmarks of one religion coming in and overwriting another). The corpse of Geush Urvan then transformed into every type of animal and plant found on the Earth. Geush Urvan is Persian for "soul of the bull/ox/cow".
