Statistics

Scroll of Dia
WHM Lv.3 / RDM Lv.1
Teaches the white magic Dia.
Lowers an enemy's defense and
gradually deals light elemental damage.
Deals 2 damage initially, then ticks 1 damage every 3 seconds for the duration of the spell.

The initial damage can be increased with enough Magic Attack Bonus, Weather and Elemental Affinity boosts. Equipment with "Enhances Dia" effect such as Dia Wand increases the damage over time component of the spell by 1.

The Defense Down value is a flat 10%. Other sources of Defense Down such as that from Acid Bolts and Armor Break may also be active on a target, but these sources are mutually exclusive with each other.

Dia's Defense Down effect cannot be resisted except in cases of complete spell immunity (e.g. Magic Shield).

Higher Tier Dia spells will overwrite this effect, ie: Dia II will override Dia, but not the other way around. Dia's effects are overwritten by equal or higher-tier Bio spell effects. Dia will only overwrite lower-tier Bio spell effects. Dia and Bio may not be on the same enemy target at the same time.

Derivations

The spell "Dia" comes from the Japanese release of Final Fantasy I. In the original localization of the game it was renamed as "Harm", "Harm2", and so on. It is an abbreviation of "Dispel Undead" with the "U" in undead being an "A" in Japanese. While names in Final Fantasy XI are influenced by English, it was left as Dia to connotate with "daylight"(as per Latin-based languages) because daylight is often depicted as harmful to the undead. As such, in the localization of the FF1 remakes Harm was changed back into Dia (and animated as a blast of sunlight in graphically advanced remakes of the game to follow the theme).[1]
