Introduction

This Guide is made to be simple. There is a lot that goes into fishing, but you don't care about any of that, you just want to know the path. If you want the extras look up one of the other guides or check out the 700 sections in the fishing section page.

What You Need to Fish

  • You must be level 15 in at least one job.
  • Have a fishing rod equipped.
  • Have bait equipped: Live bait is lost as you use it. lures can be reused unless your line snaps.
  • Water (Fresh / Salt is a thing)

Tools

  • Horizogenes: Horizon wiki has built its own timers. This page Has all the boats even the ones missing from pyogenes like: Bibiki Bay and Carpenters' Landing
  • [GreatBlue] :Tells you location / skill / bait. have this bookmarked. If its in Japanese hit the big button up top that says English.

Rank Ups

Like any craft you need to rank up every 10 levels. You can take your "exam" 2 levels early like everything else. see below for the rank up fish by rank.

Level Item Requested Rank Acquired
8-10 Moat Carp Recruit
18-20 Cheval Salmon Initiate
28-30 Giant Catfish Novice
38-40 Gugru Tuna Apprentice
48-50 Monke-Onke Journeyman
58-60 Bhefhel Marlin Craftsman
68-70 Bladefish Artisan
78-80 Three-eyed Fish Adept
88-90 Gigant Squid Veteran

How Fishing works

  • once you figure out how to equip a rod and bait, and learn what water is its time to fish.
  • The mini game is simple, you can get items, get nothing, get a fish, or a monster. Below are the messages. I think you can tell what ones not to real up: Items are generally bad. However some gil locations such as Silver Ring fishing and Mythril Sword's are worth getting. Although that would be at close to the 100 cap anyways.
Small fish: "Something caught the hook!"
Large fish: "Something caught the hook!!!"
Non-fish targets: "You feel something pulling at your line."
Monsters: "Something clamps onto your line ferociously!"
  • When you hook a fish or item arrows point to the direction you need to click. The Fish/item will fight back and move from side to side. Gold Arrows = more HP drain from the fish. Click the right direction HP drains click the wrong and the HP goes up.
    • Oh and if you are far below the skill cap the fish slowly recovers HP, and the reverse is true, if you are far above the fish's skill cap it drains HP.
  • (Fishing Pool Refresh Times): 0:00, 4:00, 6:00, 7:00, 17:00, 18:00 and 20:00.
    • There is a max number of each fish in a pool they slowly restock at the above times.

Gear And Rod's

  • Angler's Tunica Set: HQ set, get it. almost the same price, seconds as a level 15 set of gear and gives a slight increase rate of gold arrows.
  • Halcyon Rod: Your First rod really can be anything. However get the Halcyon asap.
  • Composite Fishing Rod: second rod you should get.
  • Lu Shang's Fishing Rod: final fishing rod you need. Hidden +15 to your fishing skill. Opens up a lot of spots. and nothing will break for the most part until skill 100
    • Get the Lu Shang as fast as you can if you plan to make Fishing your money maker. its worth the 2mil+ You wont be using it until 50 as there appears to be some type of nerf to it prior to skill 50.
  • the 4th Rod is pointless, its a Ponzi scheme. Get it if you want, but I would only do it when you are overflowing with gil. My deep hate for it might also have something to do with me holding the record for most turn-ins on BG for over a year...
  • that is all you need to know about gear and rods. the GP items and The Big One have uses but by that time you are not reading this.

Fish

pick a fish and try and be around 10-14(14 is max with gear) levels under it prior to 50 post 50 more opens up if you get a lu shang with it's extra +15 skill to fishing.

You do not have to take each fish to cap. If you are making good money off one just stick with that one, you are playing an MMO things change, that's why the list has multiple fish that overlap in your skill range that you can pick from. Do a tiny bit of homework and see if you should NPC or pick one that might AH better, or a combo of them for a change of pace.

Fish Cap Location Rod Bait Notes
Moat Carp 11
  • West Ronfaure*
  • So many other locations. check the moat carp page.
Effective for making gil. Insect Paste is the preferred bait for better results.
Forest Carp 20 Profitable for continuous gil making. Use same setup as Moat Carp.
Nebimonite's 27 They sell decently on the Auction House (AH).
Elshimo Frog 30 Check the AH frequently for price fluctuations. Can be highly profitable at times.
Giant Catfish 31
  • Port San d'Oria
  • Many other locations but port sandy is in town, soooooo.... ya
Non-stackable, but sell to NPC if nearby, especially if nation outpost is close.
Nosteau Herring 39 Good for AH sales or if you have Cooking skilled up you can average around 400-500 per fish craft-NPCing Pickled Herring..
Gugru Tuna 41 High AH value, continue up to cap if profitable, otherwise consider an earlier switch.
Cone Calamary 48 Viable for NPC sales if AH is not profitable, found in Bibiki Bay.
Bluetail 55 Check both NPC and AH for best selling option, available in many locations.

Lu Shang's Fishing Rod Time: Base Fishing Skill 50+

You have your lu, Right? Do you have to have the rod? a fast look at the discord shows many 80+ fishers without a Lu Shang's, there are paths to follow if you really want too. I will try my best to give you that path here as well, but fishing prints gil, you should have saved the gil by now(or soon, start savings more). Also on retail and all private servers I have always aimed to get the Lu asap so I have very little personal experience without it at this point.

  • Remember, you can access a fish up to 29 levels under the cap when using the Lu Shang's. You have not only more options with the Lu Shang's but can accesss the options normal rods have a lot sooner
Fish Cap Location Rod Bait Notes
Noble Lady 66
  • Can be caught with Composite Rod, but expect "too small for this rod" messages.
  • NPC for good return. Check AH.
Crescent Fish 69 Can be caught with Composite Rod, but expect "too small for this rod" messages.
Bladefish 71
  • Composite Rod will have Line breaks and "Too Small" message, not a good fish without the Lu.
  • Non-stackable, but NPC well. Good option close to Windurst.
Tavnazian Goby 75
  • The Halcyon Rod works just fine here.
  • If Gobies dry up, switch to Shrimp Lure for Gold Carp, a profitable alternative.
Silver Sharks 77
  • Good for NPC sales, slightly nerfed on the server.
Three-eyed Fish 81
  • Expect "too small" messages without Lu Shang's, but rod and line should hold.

You really should get a Lu Shang's Fishing Rod

Anything past this point falls into Lu Shang's or E-Rod territory. You "can" keep going if you do not mind dealing with silly amounts of line snaps, rod breaks and a very limited pool of fish.

Fish Cap Location Rod Bait Notes
Bastore Bream 86 Shrimp Lure Ideal for fishing alongside Grimmonites. Both sell well on AH and NPC.
Grimmonite 90 Sea Serpent Grotto Shrimp Lure Good choice for both AH and NPC, especially when combined with Bastore Bream.
Gigant Squid 91 Minnow Useful for skill-ups. AH prices are reasonable, but expect "too small" messages with Composite Rod.
Black Sole 96 Batallia Downs Sinking Minnow Frequent "too small" messages without Lu Shang's. Various locations available.

Final Push:Lu Shang's or Ebisu's World

if somehow you made it with all that "to small" fishing without one I just do not know what to say at this point there is nothing but line breaks and Rod snaps for anything 96+ th All fish below will take you to the cap of 100

Fish Cap Location Rod Bait Notes
Armored Pisces 108 Limited pool but a viable option. Alternative bait of Meatballs with Composite Rod, but expect line snaps.
Giant Chirai 103 Good for reaching skill cap, fished near Cloister of Storms.
Titanictus 101 Less desirable due to boat downtime, but still an available option.

More Pending

  • Final Push to 100, more options
  • 100 cap fishing ideas? Not sure if I want to put that into "the most basic guide"
