Hecteyes
These gelatinous blobs move about in dark caves and other subterranean refuges. From the Greek "hekaton," meaning "hundred," their name is certainly a misnomer born out of exaggeration since these creatures have closer to a dozen visible eyes, though they can be difficult to count. Hecteyes are not only skilled black mages but warriors as well, able to cast damaging spells and to double attack in succession. These abilities ensure that only the bravest of adventurers would consider attacking them.
Despite these strengths, Hecteyes have their weaknesses too. While they are strong against blunt weapons, they are notoriously weak against magic. Thus, with the right combination of magic attacks, even these terrifying monsters can be fodder for the prepared party. Such a prepared party will be rewarded. At all levels, Hecteyes will generally leave behind mercury and one of their many eyes. These can be used in a number of different synthesis recipes. The real rewards stem from defeating the more experienced Hecteyes, each variety of which has developed their own specialty eye. These specialty eyes can be combined to form a Hakutaku Eye Cluster, which can then be used to spawn Hakutaku - a notorious monster that drops a highly-prized hat. |
