Introduction

This Guide is made to be simple. There is a lot that goes into fishing, but you don't care about any of that, you just want to know the path. If you want the extras look up one of the other guides or check out the 700 sections in the fishing section page.

What You Need to Fish

  • You must be level 15 in at least one job.
  • Have a fishing rod equipped.
  • Have bait equipped: Live bait is lost as you use it. lures can be reused unless your line snaps.
  • Water (Fresh / Salt is a thing)

Tools

  • Horizogenes: Horizon wiki has built its own timers. This page Has all the boats even the ones missing from pyogenes like: Bibiki Bay and Carpenters' Landing
  • [GreatBlue] :Tells you location / skill / bait. have this bookmarked. If its in Japanese hit the big button up top that says English.
  • HorizonXI Fishing Discord

Rank Ups

Like any craft you need to rank up every 10 levels. You can take your "exam" 2 levels early like everything else. see below for the rank up fish by rank.

Level Item Requested Rank Acquired
8-10 Moat Carp Recruit
18-20 Cheval Salmon Initiate
28-30 Giant Catfish Novice
38-40 Gugru Tuna Apprentice
48-50 Monke-Onke Journeyman
58-60 Bhefhel Marlin Craftsman
68-70 Bladefish Artisan
78-80 Three-eyed Fish Adept
88-90 Gigant Squid Veteran

How Fishing works

  • once you figure out how to equip a rod and bait, and learn what water is its time to fish.
  • The mini game is simple, you can get items, get nothing, get a fish, or a monster. Below are the messages. I think you can tell what ones not to real up: Items are generally bad. However some gil locations such as Silver Ring fishing and Mythril Sword's are worth getting. Although that would be at close to the 100 cap anyways.
Small fish: "Something caught the hook!"
Large fish: "Something caught the hook!!!"
Non-fish targets: "You feel something pulling at your line."
Monsters: "Something clamps onto your line ferociously!"
  • When you hook a fish or item arrows point to the direction you need to click. The Fish/item will fight back and move from side to side. Gold Arrows = more HP drain from the fish. Click the right direction HP drains click the wrong and the HP goes up.
    • Oh and if you are far below the skill cap the fish slowly recovers HP, and the reverse is true, if you are far above the fish's skill cap it drains HP.
  • (Fishing Pool Refresh Times): 0:00, 4:00, 6:00, 7:00, 17:00, 18:00 and 20:00.
    • There is a max number of each fish in a pool they slowly restock at the above times.

Gear And Rod's

  • Angler's Tunica Set: HQ set, get it. almost the same price, seconds as a level 15 set of gear and gives a slight increase rate of gold arrows.
  • Halcyon Rod: Your First rod really can be anything. However get the Halcyon asap.
  • Composite Fishing Rod: second rod you should get.
  • Lu Shang's Fishing Rod: final fishing rod you need. Hidden +15 to your fishing skill. Opens up a lot of spots. and nothing will break for the most part until skill 100
    • Get the Lu Shang as fast as you can if you plan to make Fishing your money maker. its worth the 2mil+ You wont be using it until 50 as there appears to be some type of nerf to it prior to skill 50.
  • the 4th Rod is pointless, its a Ponzi scheme. Get it if you want, but I would only do it when you are overflowing with gil. My deep hate for it might also have something to do with me holding the record for most turn- ins on BG for over a year...
    • that is all you need to know about gear and rods. the GP items and The Big One have uses but by that time you are not reading this.

Fish

pick a fish and try and be around 10 levels under it prior to 50 post 50 more opens up if you get a lu shang with it's extra +15 skill to fishing. check greatblue for more locations

  • Elshimo Frog: cap at 30 check the AH to see if they are selling. At some points they go for as much as 5k a stack.
  • Giant Catfish: cap at 31, they dont stack but I was lucky and my nation had the NPC to sell to at the outpost that is very close by.
  • Gugru Tuna: swap to your Composite Fishing Rod and use a Sinking Minnow They don't stack, but sell great on the AH. I personally would take them to the cap of 41 but if you hate money / moving stock to mules move on sooner.
    • I like them for the gil value as well as a change of pace.

Lu Shang's Fishing Rod Time

You have your lu, Right? Do you have to have the rod? a fast look at the discord shows many 80+ fishers without a Lu Shang's, there are paths to follow if you really want too. I will try my best to give you that path here as well, but fishing prints gil, you should have saved the gil by now(or soon, start savings more). Also on retail and all private servers I have always aimed to get the Lu asap so I have very little personal experience without it at this point.

  • Remember you can access a fish up to 15 levels before using the Lu Shang's you have not only more options but can accesss the options normal rods have a lot sooner
  • Noble Lady: They cap at 66 found on the ships between Mhaura and Selbina. They NPC well. They might also sell on the AH. do not try and real in the large fish that fight like hell. . It's likely a Titan that can snap your rod, and unless you are also a woodworker is a waste of time.
  • Bladefish Caps at 71 While they do not stack, they NPC well and are right outside Windy so its not that bad. If you do not have a Lu Shang's the Halcyon Rod works just fine.
  • Silver Sharks cap at 77 again a nice NPC fish, they have been a nerfed a little on this server but still not bad.
  • Three-eyed Fish This happens to be one of the last fish that are easy without a Lu Shang's. If you are not using a Lu Shang's use your Composite Fishing Rod with a Minnow you will get some "to smalls" but it wont break the rod or line.

You really should get a Lu Shang's Fishing Rod

Anything past this point falls into Lu Shang's or E-Rod territory. You "can" keep going if you do not mind dealing with silly amounts of line snaps, rod breaks and a very limited pool of fish.

Lu Shang's Fishing Rod or Ebisu Fishing Rod only

if somehow you made it with all that "to small" fishing without one I just do not know what to say at this point there is nothing but line breaks and Rod snaps for anything 96+ that I know of.

Final Push

All fish below will take you to the cap of 100

More Pending

  • Final Push to 100, more options
  • 100 cap fishing ideas? Not sure if I want to put that into "the most basic guide"
